Living in Northern California means we’re surrounded by scenery that looks like it could’ve been pulled straight from a landscape painting, but the Painted Dunes at Lassen Volcanic National Park take this to a whole other level. This unique rolling terrain inside of the park is an otherworldly sight that will mesmerize you from the moment you lay eyes on it. Photos of this geologic wonder are always amazing, but nothing compares to witnessing its bizarre glory in person. Be sure to see it for yourself on your next Lassen visit and prepare to be astonished!
Located in northeastern California, Lassen Volcanic National Park is full of otherworldly natural wonders. Boasting mud pots, hot springs, and volcanoes, the park's bizarre landscape is exactly what we love most about it.
One of the park's most brilliant destinations is the Painted Dunes. This otherworldly spot is comprised of multi-colored pumice fields. Bright spots of red and orange stick out amid the stark black volcanic scenery.
It's definitely a sight to remember! The landscape's vibrant color is caused by the oxidation of volcanic ash. The ash fell on the lava flows while it was still hot, causing the eye-popping warm tones you see across the landscape today.
The Painted Dunes can be found at Cinder Cone and the Fantastic Lava Beds. Cinder Cone is a 700-foot-tall cinder cone volcano that is believed to have last erupted in the 1650s, and it dominates the surrounding scenery.
The nearly symmetrical cinder cone is the perfect vantage point for taking in the colorful landscape. However, it's a steep hike to the top and it's made difficult by the volcano's loose rocks. Brave it out and you'll be treated to a one-of-a-kind viewing and photo opportunity.
Comprised of perfectly smooth rolling hills covered in red and orange blotches, the Painted Dunes are a scene unlike any other. Surrounded by the completely black volcanic fields, the dunes appear brighter than ever.
There's a lot to see when visiting Lassen Volcanic NP, but you'll want to consider the Painted Dunes a must. This bizarre landscape is simply the type of place you have to see to believe.
Have you seen the Painted Dunes in person before? This natural wonder’s bizarre beauty is definitely worth seeking out.
