Hiding in the rugged backcountry of Elmore County is a historic mining town called Atlanta. Surrounded by the dense scenery of the Boise National Forest, it’s by far one of the state’s most rugged old mining towns. Its remote location can make visiting it a challenge, but that’s exactly why this drone footage is so exciting. Located approximately 35-miles east of Idaho City (as the crow flies), Atlanta is a near ghost town in a the remote Boise National Forest. Visiting it is quite the journey, but you can always experience it virtually through this amazing drone footage!

Atlanta was founded in 1864 when the area was discovered to be rich with gold and silver deposits. Mining would take place in the area until the late 1930s and to this day the town still boasts a small population of year-round residents.
Located at an elevation of 5,383-feet above sea level, Atlanta is completely surrounded by true and uninhibited Idaho wilderness. The town itself is located at the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Boise River, and the Sawtooth Mountains and Wilderness can be found directly north.
No significant mining has taken place in the area for over 50 years, but it's become a beloved destination for backcountry adventure and historic tourism. In the summer months, it's the site of the Atlanta School, which offers workshops and artist residencies.
Plan on a summer trip if you do decide to seek out this historic community. There are several great campgrounds to be found in the area and the town itself is home to many original buildings and area attractions.
