The beach can be found at the exact point where Big River empties into the Pacific Ocean. The result is a landscape that is too beautiful for words. Surrounded by rocky headlands and lush forest, this is exactly the type of scenery that showcases Northern California's majestic coastal beauty.
The beach itself is large and sandy—perfect for lounging on a beach towel with a good book. Big River Beach is definitely a popular destination, but there seems to always be room for people to stretch out and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
Big River Beach is also the access point for launching canoes and kayaks onto the Big River Estuary. Visitors can easily rent themselves a canoe from Catch a Canoe, located right next to the Big River Bridge, or you can bring your own.
If you take the time to explore past the beach itself, you'll discover that the area is home to a trail called the Big River Haul Road. Open for hiking and cycling, the rugged trail allows you to explore the 7,400-acres of watershed and protected land located right along the river.
