Spanning the mouth of the Pend Oreille River in North Idaho is a structure aptly named The Long Bridge. At two miles long, it’s certainly an impressive sight to this day—nevermind the fact that this incredible bridge was built over a century ago. In fact, at the time of its construction, it was considered the longest wooden bridge in the world. It may no longer have that honor today—that would be the Horai-Bashi Bridge in Japan—but it’s still a sight to see. Known simply as The Long Bridge, this impressive structure stretches north across Pend Oreille River to the city of Sandpoint. It was known as the longest wooden bridge in the world in its original form, but it's still a sight to see even to this day.
The story of how the first iteration of this bridge came to be is actually quite memorable. As the legend goes, a young child accidentally chopped off his toe and his panicked family rushed to find a way to Sandpoint to see a doctor. They lived south of the river and the only way to get there was either by ferry or rowboat.
The little boy received adequate treatment but the event brought to light the need for a faster way to link the communities on either side of the river. In 1909, construction on a 10,360-foot wooden bridge across the river was officially completed.
That first version of the Long Bridge was claimed to be the longest wooden bridge in the world at the time. There's no way to know for sure whether that was true or not, but it was most definitely an impressive structure.
Known at the time as the Wagon Bridge, it was used heavily for 23 years until a replacement was necessary. All in all, three separate bridges were built from the time the first was built until 1981 when the fourth and final bridge was finally constructed.
Spanning for two miles, those who drive across the present-day Long Bridge can enjoy an idyllic view of the river, Lake Pend Oreille, and the stunning backdrop of mountains. It definitely makes for a stellar windshield view!
