We wouldn’t recommend moving away from Nebraska, but if you’ve got to do it, be prepared for a lot of changes. Life is a whole lot different outside of these borders, and you’ll start to miss home almost immediately. These are some of the things you’ll notice right away.
1. Country drives just aren't as pretty anywhere else.
Other states have their own scenic routes, but they're just not the same. Here, country drives are almost a sport...a very, very leisurely sport.
2. The sky isn't so open and boundless everywhere else.
You can see pretty far here in Nebraska; even the Sandhills can't blot out the sky that goes all the way to the ground.
3. Other places don't always get to experience all four seasons.
Sometimes we get to have them all in one day!
4. People in other states just aren't as friendly.
We're all about staying connected to our tribe, which often includes the entire community.
5. College football is really not a big deal in some other places.
Those states with pro teams take college ball a little less seriously than we do, but we think they're missing out on the real action. GBR!
6. Runza is a regaional chain.
That's right - leave the Plains and you can kiss Temperature Tuesdays goodbye.
7. For other people, seeing bison or cattle along the road is a big deal.
We grew up thinking that fields and livestock are just what everyone sees alongside the road.
8. Our small-town charm is unmatched.
Every single one of our little towns is full of personality and charm, and spending some time in them is the best way to experience that.
9. The definition of "small town" is a lot different elsewhere.
Have you ever heard someone say that they were from a small town of "just under 100,000"? Rural Nebraska towns often list population numbers in the three-to-four-digit range.
10. Our biggest cities really aren't that big.
Omaha and Lincoln seem pretty big when they're the largest cities you've ever been to...but they're dwarfed by other major cities.
11. A surprising number of people don't know where Nebraska is.
Personally, this writer has adopted the explanation, "It's right in the middle." (This writer also recommends those people look at a map sometime.)
12. We can handle anything.
No matter where in Nebraska you're from, there's a kind of hardiness that most of us thrive on. We can handle anything from unpredictable weather to ailing livestock to fluctuating crop prices, and we always pull through.
13. There's no place like home.
Don't worry - Nebraska will still be here for you when you come to your senses and decide to move back.
