The landscape of Nevada’s Gold Butte National Monument is far from boring, that’s for sure. The area, filled with incredible rock formations and neverending desert scenery, never fails to inspire awe in its visitors. However, one of the most fascinating destinations in the entire monument can be found at a place called Whitney Pockets. Whitney Pockets (also known as singular Whitney Pocket) is a remote region of Gold Butte National Monument that gives visitors a glimpse at the otherworldly rock formations that Nevada's desert landscape is capable of.
Located approximately 22 miles from Bunkerville, this primitive landscape can take some effort to find. To get there, take I-15 to exit 112. You'll follow the road, turning right after you cross the river on Gold Butte Road. Whitney Pocket can be found about 15-miles down the road.
The journey to this remote corner of Nevada is long, but it's worth it. Once here, you'll witness breathtaking sandstone outcroppings, similar to those you'd see in the more well-known Valley of Fire. However, the tranquil beauty adds something special to this place that you can't experience anywhere else.
Comprised of several high mounds that tower over the flat landscape of the Mojave Desert, Whitney Pocket is a geologic hidden gem. You'll also spot several historical structures in the area that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps decades and decades ago.
Whitney Pocket contains a large gravel parking area where you can start your adventure. The parking area also marks the end of the paved road. Instead, you'll spot several dirt roads that branch off from the area and take you deep into the monument's most pristine landscapes.
Camping is free at Whitney Pockets, but be aware that there are no marked or developed sites. Visitors should have no problem staking out their own spot to set up camp, but remember to bring all necessary supplies including food and water. There are no services whatsoever out here.
There are some landscapes in Nevada that must be seen to be fully believed, and Whitney Pockets is one of them. This bizarre, sandstone-laden area requires a long drive to find, but you'll realize that it's worth every single mile.
