There’s no shortage of unique things to see and do in New York. Storm King Art Center is an open-air museum in New Windsor with possibly the largest collection of outdoor sculptures in the country. Stroll through its 500 acres and you’ll be amazed at sculptures big and small. The center features both permanent exhibits and temporary installations, so there’s always something new to see.
At the New York State Museum in Albany, you'll find the Cohoes Mastodon, first displayed in 1867 – making it the first life-size restoration of an American mastodon in the world.
In the town of Millbrook, visit a replica of a medieval castle – and even take a guided tour – at the charming Wings Castle, which resembles something out of a fairytale. Artists Peter and Toni Ann Wing began building the castle back in 1970, and it later became a bed and breakfast. There’s even a museum onsite of antique memorabilia.

If you’re looking for more weird places in New York to visit, why not put some roadside attractions on your bucket list? Head to Long Island to visit The Big Duck, a ferrocement building in the shape of – you guessed it – a friendly, yellow-beaked duck. Originally built in 1931 by duck farmer Martin Maurer, the Big Duck is 30 feet long from beak to tail, and 20 feet tall, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Inside, you’ll find a quaint gift shop with Big Duck-themed merchandise.
In Buffalo, stop at Canalside and snap a photo with Shark Girl, a fiberglass sculpture of a girl with a shark head created by Casey Riordan Millard in 2013. Shark Girl is perched upon a boulder, and she’s thoughtfully left room for you to sit beside her and take a selfie.
If you’re a dog lover, don’t miss the giant statue of Nipper the dog in Albany. This 28-foot-tall steel and fiberglass statue memorializes the dog whose image became part of the logo for multiple audio recording companies. He was the model for the painting His Master’s Voice by Francis Barraud, which depicts Nipper listening intently to a phonograph.
