We often host special events in Kentucky to commemorate anniversaries and moments from our state’s past. There are countless festivals and annual gatherings that bring us all together to celebrate and this spring, the city of Louisville will celebrate one of its most prominent features. The Big Four Bridge spans the Ohio River, connecting Louisville to Jeffersonville, Indiana and was converted into a pedestrian pathway seven years ago. To commemorate the anniversary of the new life of this bridge, a first time event will take place in May. Dinner on the Bridge in Kentucky is the first of its kind to be held on the Big Four Bridge and it’s bound to be the event of the year.

Waterfront Park is a beautiful area along the Ohio River in Louisville, but it wasn't always like this.

It now hosts an assortment of events, attracts locals and visitors, and is a wonderful spot to walk, especially when you cross the Big Four Bridge.

You can see the Big Four Bridge at the bottom of the photo. This bridge was open to rail traffic from the 1890s to the 1960s, until the approach to the bridge for trains to travel on was taken down.
The bridge was then known as a "bridge to nowhere" and sat unused for many years.

That is, until 2013 when the Big Four Bridge reopened to the public after renovations and the addition of this winding pedestrian entrance to the bridge itself. The Kentucky side of the bridge officially opened to the public on February 7, 2013.

If you're wondering why it is called the Big Four Bridge, the name dates back to the railroad. The bridge got its name from the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, which was nicknamed the "Big Four Railroad."
Today, you won't see any locomotives crossing the bridge, but you will see plenty of people walking and riding bikes.

And to celebrate the bridge's rebirth from seven years ago, a special event will take place on May 29, 2020. Dinner on the Bridge will be a first-of-its-kind event where dinner will be served right on the bridge.
Spend the evening overlooking the city and the Ohio River, while being treated to a delicious four-course dinner, libations, and music.

While the park below has hosted a number of events over the years, this is the first time a gathering of this kind has happened on the bridge.
