Most Idahoans take pride in our state’s friendly and welcoming nature, but apparently that doesn’t apply to the roads. According to a new study, Idahoans are ranked as the second rudest drivers in the nation. Womp, womp. The study used self-reported driving violations to look at what they consider “rude driving behavior.” All in all, the state of Virginia took the top spot for rudest drivers in the country, followed by Idaho, Wyoming, and New York. Read on to see exactly why the Gem State was ranked so high in this recent survey.
According to a study recently released by an insurance quotes comparison site called Insurify, Idaho is home to some of the rudest drivers in the country. Coming in at second on the list of top 10 rudest states, it's clear that Idaho drivers have some things to work on.
In order to determine which states had the rudest drivers, Insurify referred to its own database of over two million insurance applications and self-disclosed driving violations. They compiled a list of violations that could be considered "extreme forms of rude driving" and looked at what states had the most violations and rude behaviors.
These violations include the following: failure to yield right of way or to a pedestrian, failure to stop (at red lights, school buses, and stop signs), improper backing, prohibited passing, tailgating, street racing, and hit-and-runs. The states with the highest proportion of drivers who committed these violations made the list.
Unfortunately, Idaho ranked number two on the list. This means the Gem State boasts the second-highest share of rude drivers in America. In fact, Insurify gathered that 47.5 out of 1,000 Idaho drivers have been cited for rude driving behavior.
So, what seems to be Idaho's biggest violation? According to the study, tailgating is especially high in our state. Drivers reported tailgating at an incredible 4.89 times the national average. Failure to yield was the second most common violation found in the Gem State.
Alternatively, the states with the most polite drivers were Kentucky, Mississippi, and Vermont. Each of these states boasted just 10-17 drivers per 1,000 that exhibited rude driving behaviors.
