Life in Iowa is pretty great year round, but still, every New Year we make resolutions to try to improve it! This year, skip the boring, ordinary resolutions and make goals to help you get in touch with your home state. After all, there is so much to discover here that you’ll never be bored! Plus, you’ll get out and about, into nature, and expand your cultural horizons. That alone sounds like a pretty good way to improve your everyday life!
1. Make time to stop and smell the roses.
Life in Iowa will quickly pass you by if you don't take the time to appreciate it. Visit scenic botanical gardens, like Reiman Gardens in Ames, to make time to literally stop and smell the roses.
2. Get in touch with Iowa's remarkable history.
Effigy Mounds National Monument is a nearly unbelievable place created by Iowa's first residents. Learn all about these sacred burial mounds and the efforts to preserve them for all time and you'll come away with a deeper appreciation for Iowa's history.
3. Treat yourself to a world-famous gourmet meal.
One small town restaurant, Archie's Waeside, has earned international recognition for their dry aged steaks. The tiny town of Le Mars isn't the only place you'll find gourmet meals, though. Des Moines is consistently rated as one of the top foodie towns in the country. Make those reservations and treat yourself to delicious food!
4. Take your family on a trip back in time.
There are so many quiet and rural villages and towns that preserve life in Iowa the way it used to be. Visit the Amana Colonies, Kalona, or the Villages of Van Buren to see for yourself.
5. Enjoy a bird's eye view from a landmark lookout.
At least once a year, make it a point to visit Pikes Peak State Park and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Mississippi River! This is one of the clearest and highest views of the river throughout the entire Midwest. You can find a beautiful view by hiking or driving, so there's no excuse to miss it this year.
6. Explore Iowa's stunning natural wonders.
Iowa is home to a whole lot of forests, and a whole lot of corn fields. If you make the time to viist our state parks and forests, though, you'll find a world of cliffs and caves, rapids and quiet rivers. There's so much to find hiding right under your nose, so lace up those hiking boots and get out there.
7. Take the scenic route more often.
Remember when you were a teenager first learning to drive, and you would spend the night out with your friends going gravel? Find some inspiration in your youthful wanderlust and explore Iowa's scenic byways. You'll appreciate the detour and the memorable windshield views.
8. Plan the best Iowa-Iowa party your friends have ever seen.
Iowa-Iowa games are like our Super Bowl. This year, host an event that will have the town talking! If you don't have a kiddie pool full of beer cheese dip, you're doing it wrong.
9. Commit to exploring new towns all year long.
There's nothing like life in small town Iowa. If you always find yourself visiting the same places when you're looking for a getaway or a day trip, try to branch out! Visit a few new towns this year and you'll be rewarded by endless discoveries.
