If you enjoy stargazing, South Dakota is the place to be, as our nighttime skies are typically pitch black and offer unobstructed views. While looking at the heavens on your own can be beautiful enough, there is one place in particular that has some of the best views in the world, which is the Hidden Valley Observatory:
Located in Rapid City, the Hidden Valley Observatory is a small observatory that is owned and operated by Black Hills Astronomical Society and open to the public on specific dates.
Opened in 1965, the building was constructed entirely by donations and volunteers, and soon became a local favorite thanks to the annual “Journey to the Stars,” where numerous telescopes were set up along the premise for public use.
Since starting both the Hidden Valley Observatory and annual “Journey to the Stars,” the Black Hills Astronomical Society has expanded its mission to include more special events, including their can't-miss Star Parties, which take place several times a year and highlight a different theme.
If you want to learn more about galaxies, star clusters, or even space important missions, you will want to partake in one of these unforgettable events, which are announced via the Black Hills Astronomical Society's Facebook .
In addition to attending these public events, South Dakotans have the opportunity to become a member of the Black Hills Astronomical Society, which costs $25 per year per family and includes members-only observing at dark sites, plus access to special telescopes and the Hidden Valley Observatory.
Trust us: whether or not you have a special telescope, you are guaranteed to see some of the most jaw-dropping skies you have ever seen around the Hidden Valley Observatory!
