Interestingly, the state park was originally named for Sam Houston, a Texan who traveled extensively throughout western Louisiana. Today, however, it’s named after Sam Houston Jones, who was a key player in setting aside the land to be used as a state park.

There are five trails, each varying in length, with the longest trail clocking in at just over three miles.

Most of the trails hover around one mile in length, making it the perfect outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy.

In addition to deer, rabbits, alligators, and even the occasional bobcat, the area is located in the Central Migratory Flyway, which means it’s an ideal location for birdwatchers. In the spring and the fall, nearly 200 species of birds pass through the area.
