Northern California is home to a handful of really great sledding hills where you can indulge in an entire day of fantastic snowy fun, but one of the most popular by far is Eskimo Hill. Located about an hour east of Redding, this sledding hill definitely belongs on your winter bucket list.
Located right off of Highway 44, Eskimo Hill has proven itself as one of the most popular sledding destinations in Northern California. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, it's a great place for families to play in the snow without spending an exorbitant amount at a fancy snow resort.
Eskimo Hill attracts visitors from all over the northern region of the state. The sledding season usually starts in early December and lasts well into March, drawing in weekend crowds of up to 600 people in one day.
Since it's such a popular destination, the U.S. Forest Service provides a few tips so that families can have a safe and fun visit. These tips include: walking along the edge of the hill to reach the top, keeping out of the way of sled paths, and only using tubes, toboggans, and sleds for sliding down the hill.
You won't find any fancy amenities at Eskimo Hill, but that's just what we love about it. However, the area does include a parking area, vault toilets, and fire rings for keeping warm on those extra frigid days.
If you do visit this beloved sledding hill, be sure to dress warmly and keep an eye on your young ones. The hill itself is actually very tall and fast which makes for a thrilling ride, but can definitely be dangerous if you don't pay attention to your surroundings.
