When most non-Idahoans hear of our state, they usually conjure up images of boring potato fields, or they ask “Where’s that?” Little do they know that Idaho contains a vast array of landscapes, including some of the most unspoiled wilderness areas that North America has to offer. However, public image of the Gem State may be changing in the near future, thanks to the arrival of a new television series from Discovery Channel. This brand new TV show is bringing national attention to one of Idaho’s most stunning natural wonders: the River Of No Return.
For us Idahoans, the Gem State has always been a star. However, Idaho is getting some serious and much-deserved attention with a new television show called "River of No Return" on Discovery Channel.
The show premiered earlier this month and it focuses on a region of Idaho that is considered one of the most unspoiled and remote areas in the country: the Frank Church Wilderness. This stunning wilderness area boasts 2.4 million acres, making it the largest in the United States outside of Alaska.
Of course, the Salmon River—commonly referred to as "The River of No Return"—is a main focus of the show. One of Idaho's most wild and scenic rivers, the Salmon is the main form of transportation into the most remote regions of the Frank Church Wilderness.
Specifically, the show will portray a small community of homesteaders who live in this massive wilderness area, following what their lives are like and how they survive. As you can imagine, the people who live in "The Frank" must endure extreme conditions and rely on their own survival skills.
In order to survive, these Idahoans must co-exist with the Salmon River and use it to access necessary supplies. Considered the largest un-dammed river in North America, this river is known for being challenging to traverse, hence its nickname.
If you've had the opportunity to float down the Salmon River, you know exactly why it's called the River of No Return. Surrounded by steep canyon walls and boasting up to Class 5 whitewater rapids, the Salmon River is a popular rafting spot for hardcore adventurers. However, we couldn't imagine what it's like to rely on this unpredictable river for survival!
The Frank Church Wilderness and the Salmon River represent one of our favorite things about the Gem State—pure, unspoiled wilderness. It only makes sense Discovery Channel would make a show about it!
