Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
Travel through one of the most scenic areas of North Dakota on this 33-mile drive. It’s beautiful at any time of year, but especially in the fall. There’s plenty to see and do along this route so buckle up and take an adventure:
The Rendezvous Region Scenic Backway is a gorgeous drive through the Rendezvous Region around towns like Walhalla and Cavalier, North Dakota. It will take you along old county highways and through picturesque scenery.
This area is heavily wooded and known for being a spectacular fall foliage destination, as well as a place for winter and summer fun. You'll drive through colorful forests and meadows, and over a river.
People love this backway for the many stops along the way. You can visit places like the Pembina Gorge Recreation Area, small near-ghost towns, overlooks, and more.
One of the key features along the route is the Icelandic State Park and Gunlogson Nature Preserve, and you'll definitely want to stop here when driving the route.
This park is around the Tongue River and Lake Renwick, both absolutely stunning to see in the fall and full of outdoor activities for the rest of the year. Kayaking, cross-country skiing, camping, and plenty of trails are available here.
Other stops include historic sites like the Kittson Trading Post, which is the oldest building still standing in North Dakota - predating ND even becoming a state by over 40 years. There are also prehistoric fossil sites in the area.
You'll also be headed right for Frost Fire Park, a great place for skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. The Rendezvous Scenic Backway is perfect for any outdoors enthusiast or anyone just looking to take a pretty drive.
