There are a few Idaho waterfalls that come to mind when you think of “must-see” destinations. Places like Shoshone Falls near Twin Falls and Mesa Falls near Ashton are considered some of our state’s top tourist spots, and for good reason. Those waterfalls are simply breathtaking! However, there is an abundance of lesser-known waterfalls that are equally as beautiful and worth seeking out. One of them is the secret waterfall known as Sheep Falls, and you’ll want to plan an adventure to see it for yourself right away.
Eastern Idaho is a region of the state that isn't explored as often as others, but it's full of beautiful hidden gems that are worth seeking out. One of them is Sheep Falls, a majestic secret waterfall located along the Falls River.
Located near the southwest (and rarely used) entrance to Yellowstone National Park, Sheep Falls is a sight definitely worth uncovering for yourself. To get there is quite the adventure, but rest assured that you'll be adequately rewarded for your efforts!
To get there, take Highway 20 towards Ashton and West Yellowstone. Make a right turn at the Mesa Scenic Byway and a right turn once again at Cave Falls Road. Keep driving until you come across the sign pointing you towards Sheep Falls.
One there, you'll immediately be struck by the extraordinary beauty of Falls River. Boasting clear and shallow water, the way it winds through the surrounding pine trees is bound to leave you in awe. The waterfall is just the cherry on top!
Sheep Falls is simply a breathtaking sight. Most visitors observe the falls from a section of the river that forks off of the main section. The water cascades over a rock ledge before falling into a foaming pool below. The roar of the water here is amazing!
The other part of the river falls off a bit further downstream in a beautiful and elegant cascade. The boulders lining the falls are a great place to sit and take it all in, but be sure to use caution since they're bound to be slippery.
Sheep Falls may not be as popular as some of Idaho's more iconic waterfalls, but its beauty definitely matches. Consider seeking out this secret waterfall on your next adventure and experience its majestic beauty with your own eyes.
