We just can’t get enough of apple-flavored everything in the fall. The apple harvest is bountiful here, and the apple orchards always offer some of the most delicious apple-flavored treats you can imagine. Although there are plenty of places to get an amazing apple donut and fresh apple cider in Nebraska, this orchard may be the very best place to indulge.
Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard has been around since 1925. In that time it's grown from a small family apple orchard into a huge fall destination complete with food, fun, and even education.
Today, one of the biggest draws for visitors is the Apple Barn Market, where you can browse hundreds of goods from right there on the orchard and from other Nebraska businesses and farms, including honey, dressings, canned olives and pickles, and so much more. Check out the selection of local wines for a grown-up treat.
The next time you visit, make a beeline to the back of the market. That's where you'll find the Kimmel Kitchen with a wealth of delicious things to fuel your day.
Our favorite is the apple doughnuts. They're soft and crumbly on the inside, just a tiny bit crisp on the outside, and coated in cinnamon and sugar for the perfect finishing touch. They're made fresh in the kitchen every single day.
You can (and should!) grab a warm donut fresh from the kitchen window and enjoy it right there. But once you taste these famously addictive doughnuts, you'll want to be sure to pick up at least a dozen more to take home with you.
Grab a couple of gallons to take home, of course, but you can also get single-serving bottles from the cooler. We all know that autumn in Nebraska doesn't always mean cooler weather, so this little bottle is the perfect way to cool down.
Be sure to bring an appetite - or at least have room in your car for all of the delicious goodies you'll want to take home. The caramel apples will probably be the best you've ever had; they're made with fresh, crisp, perfectly tart apples grown right here.
The apple pie is absolutely heavenly. This flaky crust tastes just like Grandma's, and the apples' natural flavor is enhanced by baking. Don't forget a scoop of ice cream on top!
If you'd like to experience the orchard up close, hop on the hayrack for a ride out to the U-pick apple rows. Your guide will tell you which varieties are in season and can even make recommendations.
And if all of that wasn't enough to wear out the whole family, there are also tons of places for the kids to burn off some energy. The children's play area is filled with fun activities that will keep them busy while you sneak another apple donut or two.
