Alabama is no stranger when it comes to paranormal activity. In fact, some of the nation’s most haunted cemeteries are right here in the Yellowhammer State. One in particular is located in the town of Kinston. For information about this town and its haunted cemetery, take a look below.
Kinston is located in Coffee County, Alabama. With a population of less than 600, it's also one of the state's smallest towns.
One of Kinston's most well-known places is Harrison Cemetery, which according to Findagrave.com, has 159 burial sites. It's one of Alabama's spookiest cemeteries.
Harrison Cemetery's most famous resident is Grancer Harrison. Mr. Harrison was an extremely wealthy cotton planter. Prior to his death in 1860, he left thorough instructions for his slaves that explained his burial requests.
He wanted an above-ground tomb, so his slaves built him one before his death. Mr. Harrison also wanted to be buried on his feather bed while wearing his dancing shoes. In fact, several people have reported hearing the sounds of a fiddle playing and the tapping of clogs as they walked near his grave.
If you're a fan of Southern literature, you might be familiar with Grancer Harrison from Kathryn Tucker Windham's famous book "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey." This book includes 13 ghost stories, and the one featuring Mr. Harrison is titled "The Dancing Ghost of Grancer Harrison."
The next time you're passing through the Kinston area, be sure to stop by Harrison Cemetery to view Grancer Harrison's grave. Who knows? He might even dance for you.
