If you look up the word charming in a dictionary or online, it is defined as “pleasant or attractive,” but if we had our say, we would describe it as “Faulkton, South Dakota.” Why? This small South Dakota town is lovely, friendly, and downright magical, which we believe makes it both charming and a must-visit place. Need we say more? Read on:
Located in Faulk County, Faulkton is a quaint town of 750 residents that was named for Andrew Jackson Faulk (the 3rd governor of South Dakota) in 1886.
While some communities of less than 1,000 residents may not seem too exciting, Faulkton proves to be anything but and offers not only a great place to live but several things to see and do as well.
What is there to see and do in Faulkton? If you love history, you are in luck, as Faulkton houses the Pickler Mansion (pictured) as well as several historic sites and markers within a few miles radius.
The Pickler Mansion is a Victorian prairie home that depicts life in Faulkton around the time it was established.
Are you visiting with family? There is plenty to keep the littles entertained, including a movie theater, parks, and a bowling alley!
In addition to all of the above, Faulkton also boasts several fabulous campgrounds, delicious restaurants, and shops, making for a perfect weekend getaway.
While you cannot go wrong with anything in Faulkton, the best part of all has to be the stunning carousel that earned it the nickname "Carousel City."
Built in 1925 by the C.W. Parker Co., the Faulkton City Carousel was purchased by resident Bob Ketterling in 1981, who went on to give free rides to children until his death in 1988. After his passing, the city purchased the carousel from his widow and still operates it in his memory.
The City Carousel runs Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
