A lot of people don’t realize just how large the performing arts community in Minnesota truly is. Minneapolis is second to only NYC in theater seats per capita, and the Twin Cities is the only area besides NYC to support two full-time orchestras (The Minnesota Orchestra and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra). In the spirit of appreciating this state’s dedication to the performing arts, we want to share 7 of Minnesota’s favorite theaters, and want to hear about the other local theaters you love too!
Founded in 1963, and in this beautiful location since 2006, the Guthrie is one of the best theaters in Minnesota without a doubt. The theater is located on the beautiful Mississippi right by Gold Medal Park in Minneapolis. The current production is Pericles and in the next month you can look forward to The Amish Project and You for Me for You.
MPR’s largest broadcast studio in St. Paul is a Minnesota classic, especially for all who grew up with A Prairie Home Companion®. You just can't beat sitting in the historic theater, watching Garrison Keillor live.
Now owned by The Hennepin Theatre Trust, The Orpheum Theatre, once owned by Bob Dylan and his brother is a Minneapolis institution. It opened in 1921, was completely restored in 1993, and is known for it's unique design details. This February head to The Orpheum to see the musical Newsies!
One of the U.S.’s leading not-for-profit performing arts centers, the Ordway's appearance is matched in impressiveness by it's wide variety of shows. Find plays and music like the The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Opera this upcoming month.
Also owned by the Hennepin Theater Trust, this theater has been open since 1921. It was designed by Chicago architect J.E.O. Pridmore in a free Italian Renaissance style and was fully restored from 1989- 1991. In February catch the Valentine’s Day Laugh-a-Thon.
Old Log is one of the longest continuously running theatre companies in the nation, and beautifully represents Minnesota with it's classic design. Right now you MUST see The Wedding Singer (yes, based on the movie) for a hilarious night of 80s songs and nostalgia.
The Nation's Largest Professional Dinner Theatre is a can't-miss attraction in Minnesota. Through February 27th catch Sister Act on the stage, and enjoy one of the best meals you'll ever have!
