Who knew the best geological features in Illinois would be way at the bottom of the state? Down in Herod–like way at the bottom of Illinois–is Shawnee National Forest. It is a pretty large forest at 415 square miles. So if you are looking for a place to hike, there are definitely loads of places.
Within the park itself, there are many amazing features. But everyone agrees that if you go, you need to see the Garden of the Gods. With that name, it is likely that the thing so named would not live up to it. But as you can see from these photos, it certainly does. This place is phenomenal.
This incredible geological feature took 320 millions of years to form. Once upon a time, Illinois was actually covered in sea. The water went away and revealed these amazing rock formations. One of the wonderful things about the park is that you will leave educated about how this place came to be.
