Embark on a truly one-of-a-kind adventure when you set off on the Ashton-Tetonia Trail in Eastern Idaho. This rail trail is epic in every way, and you'll want to explore every inch of it.
Officially opened to the public in 2010, the trail is a relatively new addition to our state. However, it's already proven itself as one of the most unique adventures Idaho has to offer. The trail stretches for nearly 30 miles, connecting the towns of Ashton to Tetonia.
The trail follows what was once the Teton Valley Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. Constructed between 1910 and 1912, the line was comprised of 46 miles and ended in the town of Victor.
Today, the old railroad makes for an excellent trail for cyclists and pedestrians alike. Not only is it a smooth and well-maintained ride, but it shows off some of the most beautiful Idaho scenery.
During your time on the trail, you'll traverse five bridges and restored railroad trestles. You'll wind through groves of aspen and large swaths of farmland, all the while the gorgeous Teton Mountain Range is visible in the distance as well.
One of the most notable structures along the trail is the Bitch Creek Trestle–and yes, that's its real name! Spanning 600-feet in length and sitting at 130-feet-high, riding across it is certainly an experience to remember.
Although the trail starts in Ashton, it can be accessed from a variety of locations. The trail also makes stops in the towns of Marysville, Bitch Creek, and Felt. Challenge yourself to complete it in a day or break it up into smaller sections for a more easygoing journey.
Whether you complete it on foot or on bicycle, one thing is for sure. Your time on the Ashton-Tetonia Trail is something you'll never forget. Experience awe-inspiring views along with some of Idaho's best scenery and be sure to accomplish this trail soon!
