If you’re looking for the perfect afternoon day trip idea, this amazing attraction in Massachusetts’ capital city is a colorful option. Peek inside a giant globe made almost entirely of glass and be prepared to have your breath stolen away. Here’s what you need to know about visiting this awesome spot.
You’ve never seen anything like the Mapparium. This stunning glass structure is one of the most colorful and visually arresting attractions in Massachusetts.
Housed at Boston’s famed Mary Baker Eddy Library, the Mapparium was built in 1935 out of gorgeous stained glass. It’s portrayed the world map as it was in the 1930s, which means there are some curiously out-of-date details such as the inclusion of Siam, French Indonesia, and the USSR.
The best part of visiting this awesome spot? You can actually walk right inside the globe! Simply open a nondescript wooden door and you’ll be thrust into the glowing glass structure.
Visitors can walk across a bridge and marvel at all the detail close up. If you stand at the exact center of the Mapparium, you’ll be able to hear your own voice in complete 360-degree surround sound due to the unique curvature of the sculpture.
You’re sure to be wowed by the sheer scale of this place. It’s the perfect place to marvel at the beauty of the planet and even learn a bit of geography while you’re at it.
Admission to the Mapparium starts daily at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m., when the library closes. The cost to step inside the Mapparium is $6 per adult and $4 for seniors, youths up to 17, and students. Kids under five years of age are admitted free.
Tours take about 15 to 20 minutes, but there’s plenty to do in the library afterwards. Don’t miss this amazing urban day trip destination!
