Once upon a time, wolves roamed among the mountains of Colorado and were as common to see as elk, antelope, and bears. While these gray wolves were native to Colorado, they were extirpated in the 1940s, only to be re-introduced in the surrounding states some decades later. While seeing these wild canines out and about is no longer the norm, at this wolf sanctuary in Colorado, you can get an up-close look at these beautiful creatures.

Located in the town of Divide, the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center has a mission to both rescue wolves and educate the public.

Guests include Coloradans as well as folks from other parts of the country
Established in 2003, the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center was the brain-child of Darlene Kobobel.

She owned a wolf-dog (a cross between a wolf and a dog) and started a rescue in order to save and protect these often controversial animals.
Soon after opening, the center began getting calls from people across the country in need of surrendering their wolf-dogs.

The result was an acute need to deal with overcrowding and to offer more public education about these animals.
After a donor offered a 35-acre lot to the rescue, it transformed into the Colorado animal sanctuary that we find today.

Despite having to move locations after a devastating fire it has continued to save countless wolves.
