Adventurers can find Castle Lake by completing the Castle Lake Trail. At around 10 miles out-and-back, it's definitely a long journey. However, the lake at the end of the trail makes it SO worth it.
The trailhead can be found near Dunsmuir off of Mt. Bradley Road. From the parking lot, you'll follow the path east across Castle Lake Creek before turning south and upward. The trail does gain quite a bit of elevation, so prepare yourself!
As the trail ascends the walls surrounding the lake, you'll witness breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. The lake can be seen in the distance, and the towering Mount Shasta looms above it all.
As you get closer and closer to the lake, you'll find yourself in complete awe of this spectacular body of water. Considered one of the three largest lakes in the Klamath Mountains, Castle Lake is certainly an impressive sight.
Boasting crystal clear water, you could spend hours relaxing on the lake's shores and taking it all in. A quick dip in the water is refreshing on a hot summer day, but it's definitely cold.
At this point, the trail branches off into several different routes. From here, you can follow a specific path to reach other dreamy destinations such as Castle Peak, Mount Bradley, and Heart Lake. This is largely why the Castle Lake Trail is considered such a great jumping off point for exploring the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
Although this trail definitely has its challenges, spending some time with Castle Lake is the perfect reward for such a strenuous journey. Lose track of time and soak up the endless natural beauty that this lake has to offer. This is an adventure you're bound to love.
