The Knife River Indian Villages is a historic site located near Stanton, North Dakota. It is a wonderful place to learn about the state's heritage and history.
It rests on the original site of a huge Hidatsa village that was around for 500 hundred years, long before the United States was a country, let alone North Dakota being a state.
Inside the earth lodge you can get a taste of how the people of the area lived. It is set up as accurately as possible and will almost make you feel like you've been transported back in time.
The Knife River Indian Villages are notable for much more than the nice visitors center and earth lodge. This was indeed the site of a huge village, one that became vital in Native American trading as well as a year round home. Today, the original impressions of some of the hundreds of earth lodges in the village are still visible.
The historic site has multiple areas of interest you can take trails to and see these impressions in the ground. These sites are incredible to stand before, imagining them filled with dwellings and people living out the early North Dakota life.
