Hike Through This Rock Maze Near Buffalo For An Adventure Like No Other

As Buffalonians, we’re fortunate enough to live in a city that has a large, incredible park system for us to make use of; however, we’d be fools to ignore the fact that all it takes is a quick drive outside of the city of Buffalo to reach some of our state’s best parks. Head south for just over an hour and you’ll find yourself in Cattaraugus County, where you’ll discover an enchanting rock maze the explore. Check it out!
Rock City Park in Orean is more than worth the drive from Buffalo.
On your way, you’ll pass through a white picket fence that almost feels like it separates this place from the rest of reality. A short drive down the road will reveal whimsical signs hinting at what you're about to experience.
Park in the lot at the end of the road and take a quick peek in the gift shop and main building before you embark on your adventure.
We know you’ll be eager to hit the trail, but trust us when we tell you that the store is worth checking out, especially for the fascinating historical context it provides.
Rock City Park first opened to the public all the way back in 1890, and as you walk around the shop, you can peer into the past through the historic photos showcasing the park in its early days.
Now that you know a little more about this place, it’s time for the main attraction! Make sure to come prepared for your adventure by wearing sturdy shoes or boots, as you’ll be traversing some uneven terrain.
Head down the staircases leading you into and through towering rock crevices. The amazing terrain almost feels like you’re on another planet.
Rock City Park is the largest formation of Quartz conglomerate in the entire world!
While the hiking trails are root-filled and rocky, they are not overly challenging, so this is a great adventure for explorers of all ages.
As you explore the park, you'll hike underneath boulders, stroll through rock caves, and walk along rock staircases that are said to date back to more than 100 years ago.
Each turn you make will lead you to amazing sights, but there’s one natural wonder that certainly stands out: a jaw-dropping balanced rock that weighs in at 1,000 tons!
Throughout the park, you'll find signs sharing the quirky names that certain formations have been given, while other signs will give you glimpses into the park's history.
Though only 23 acres, this underrated park is one of the most interesting and unique outdoor adventures you’ll ever experience.
Rock City Park is open for visitors until October 31st, so get out there and start exploring!
