The tourism scene in Alaska is red hot. We get millions of visitors every year, which is great and all for the economy, but bad for the people that hate crowds (pretty much all Alaskans). I suggest you stick to your gut and steer clear of the herd and spend time visiting some of these more underrated places around the state.
The small town of Healy is very underrated and underappreciated. Just North of Denali National Park you can enjoy a quaint town with beautiful scenery. Try Bison Gulch Trail up Mount Healy.
On the northwestern tip of Chichagof Island is the lesser-known fishing town of Elfen Cove. The Alaskan scenery that you can experience on the plane or boat ride out there makes it an unforgettable place.

Visit this AWESOME beach in Homer. There are gorgeous mountain views and hours of fun to be had walking the beach and exploring the tide pools.
