The Palmetto State is home to a variety of nostalgic restaurants that offer a window into the past and many generations worth of delicious meals that have been devoured within their walls. (See 13 of the oldest restaurants in the state here.) When it comes to unforgettable delicatessens, there is no match for the Columbia icon known as Groucho’s. Now franchised throughout the Carolinas, Groucho’s was born in Soda City in the early 1940s – and the Original location is still open.
So much of the past is preserved in the Original Groucho's location. Seen here: a photo of founder Harold Miller, who with his signature moustache and similar mannerisms of the famous American comedian, Groucho Marx, was bestowed the affectionate name of "Groucho" soon after arriving in Columbia in 1941.
He opened a delicatessen and market and was soon feeding the city his famous meats, cheeses, and sauces. Back then, the eatery was also a market; eventually, the market was phased out and replaced with more tables for dining.
If you have a burning desire for the best sub sandwich in the Carolinas, then head to Groucho's for the original sub, called "Baby Sub." Don't let the name fool you. It's anything BUT small. The fat sub roll is loaded and served hot with salami, bologna and a Provolone cheese melt. It has a signature herb slaw center topped by lean ham. Wow!
In total, the original Groucho's at Five Points has an epic 29 sandwiches and subs on the menu. There's sure to be something for everyone here, whether you're in the mood for a sub or a sandwich. A variety of salads round out the selections.
