Here in Idaho, adventure is never that far away. In fact, all you have to do is hop onto one of our state's many scenic byways and let it take you through the Gem State's gorgeous landscapes. However, there's one highway you'll definitely want to have on your radar: the Pend Oreille Scenic Byway.
This 33-mile stretch of highway through North Idaho is the perfect adventure for seeing some of our state's most stunning natural beauty. Twisting through forested mountains and rugged shorelines, there's never a dull moment on this scenic drive.
Of course, the glistening waters of the majestic Lake Pend Oreille are the highway's most notable feature. Known as the second largest lake west of the Mississippi, you really couldn't ask for a more beautiful body of water to act as a backdrop to this lovely drive.
The byway starts in Sandpoint and you'll follow Idaho Highway 200 as it stretches west towards the Montana State Line. Lake Pend Oreille is almost always in the distance, following the shoreline for more than 100 miles.
Don't worry, there are plenty of opportunities to get out of the car and take advantage of what the lake has to offer. A popular recreation destination is Sam Owen Campground, located on the Hope peninsula. The site contains numerous private campgrounds and a wonderful swimming beach.
However, Lake Pend Oreille isn't the only notable attraction found along the byway. Two rivers are also easily accessible, including the breathtaking Clark Fork River which boasts stunning scenery across delta and wetland.
The byway terminates at the Montana border. All in all, you'll want to plan for at least an hour and half to traverse the highway. However, you'll need much more time than that to truly take advantage of the amazing recreational opportunities. However you decide to do it, just be sure to accomplish this epic drive soon.
