There's one destination in Northern California that every art aficionado and history buff should visit at some point. The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento is one of the oldest museums in the country, and it makes for an incredible place to spend the day.
The museum first opened to the public 125 years ago, and it's doors have been opened ever since. That's why it's considered the longest continuously-operating museum in the West. Not only does this place have history, but it's famous for its vast collection of California art.
The museum was opened by a wealthy California family, the Crockers, who wanted to showcase their gigantic collection of paintings and drawings they had gained during a trip to Europe.
The museum itself is something of a masterpiece. In 1868, Judge Edwin B. Crocker purchased the buildings on the corner of Third and O Streets. He then commissioned a local architect, Seth Babson, to renovate the property into a grand, Italian-style mansion.
In 2010, the museum opened a brand new 125,000-square-foot building in order to triple the museum's size. The expanded museum contains all sorts of amazing resources such as an expanded library and community exhibition galleries.
Today, the museum is known for showcasing all sorts of wonderful works of art. The Californian art collection is definitely notable, featuring works that go all the way back to statehood until present day. Additionally, the museum is home to a permanent collection of Asian, African, and Oceanic art.
Simply put, there is a LOT to discover at the West's oldest museum. Seeing this place is a must for any Northern Californian with an appreciation for our state's history so be sure to add this iconic destination to your bucket list. You'll find it at 216 O St, Sacramento, CA 95814.
