One of our very favorite South Dakota state parks just turned 100 and it has never looked better! Can you guess which park we are talking about? Obviously, there are a lot of amazing choices here in SoDak, so we will cut to the chase and begin paying homage to this outdoor wonderland:
Located in Custer is -- you guessed it -- Custer State Park, a 71,000-acre oasis that was first established in 1912 and became an official park in 1919.
Named for Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, Custer State Park has continued to grow and expand since its humble beginnings and now welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year.
One of the most iconic parts of Custer is its Buffalo Roundup, which began in 1965 and consists of rounding up more than 1,000 stampeding buffalo and then auctioning off a percentage of them.
What is the need for the roundup, which attracts 10,000+ attendees a year? It is so these native animals can be more compatible with the rangeland forage.

What makes Custer State Park so popular? It is the opportunities for incredible wildlife sightings...
...plenty of places to hike and bike...
