Alaska has some beautiful roads that have grown from old pack or wagon trails. Hatcher Pass Road is one of these roads, and has been around a very long time! Winding its way from Willow to Palmer, it cuts through the Talkeetna Mountains and offers anyone who’s willing to travel it some gorgeous views!

Hatcher Pass Road, also known as Fishhook Road, connects Palmer, Alaska to Willow, Alaska.

The road is just over 49 miles long, and winds its way through the Talkeetna Mountains. The road originally acted as a trail for miners and pioneers to take to easily access deep into the Talkeetna Mountains.
The Independence Mine was one of the original gold mines out in the Talkeetnas.

The Independence Mine is now a State Historical Park, and is an excellent stop while driving this road. There is a visitor center, and an easy walking tour to explore more of the history of this well preserved gold mine.
Very close to Independence Mine Historical State Park is a gorgeous little lodge.

These iconic red buildings can be seen in some of the most famous pictures of Alaska. They are a part of Hatcher Pass Lodge, and are open to rent year round!
Besides easy access to many beautiful trailheads, the road also offers access to backcountry adventurers.

Many visitors take to the mountains to ski, hike, berry pick, or even snowmobiling. There is no limit to the amount of amazing activities you can think of doing out here!

Hatcher Pass has been a draw to paragliders for many years. Due to the limitless places to launch and the incredible scenery, people flock to the area to glide when conditions are good.
Due to poor road conditions and frequent avalanches, the road is not open year round.

Depending on late spring snowfall, you can usually expect to find the road open from July through October. The road stays open as long as its clear, but you want to be cautious during the shoulder seasons.
Even in the summer the road conditions can be poor. The road is mostly unpaved, and rental cars are advised not to travel, or you will forfeit your renter's insurance!

The spring mud can make it worse, and pot holes can quickly develop. This is one of the important reasons that the road stays closed until early summer.
If you're willing to brave it, Hatcher Pass Road is one of the most scenic roads in the state. At its highest point, you'll reach 3,386 feet above sea level.
