It’s time to get outside of your comfort zone. There are endless opportunities to have some strange but awesome adventures in this wonderful state of ours, and all you have to do is hop in the car and find them. From northern Louisiana all the way down to Grand Isle, we’ve got some of the most unique and awesome adventures you can only have in Louisiana. Here are eight of our favorites:
1. Zip-line over gators.
Gators & Friends is a wildlife park filled with everything from an exotic animal petting zoo to pony rides. The epic zip-line here is a seven-course line that will take you soaring through the woods, over the animals, and down a thrilling 750-foot run over a live alligator pond. Address: 11441 Hwy. 80, Greenwood, LA 71033
2. Sleep on the beach.
At Grand Isle State Park, you can pitch a tent right on the beach. Spend your days strolling the sandy shore while searching for shells and your evenings stargazing while listening to the sounds of the waves crashing nearby. Sounds like heaven, right? Address: 108 Admiral Craik Dr., Grand Isle, LA 70358
3. Learn about death.
The Museum of Death in New Orleans features everything from paintings by serial killers to autopsies and skeletons. Warning: this museum is not for the squeamish… but it’s absolutely fascinating if you’re into the odd and unusual. Address: 227 Dauphine St., New Orleans, LA 70112
4. Get quirky at this roadside favorite.
The Abita Mystery House is just one of those places you have to see to believe. Thousands of found objects, homemade inventions, and memorabilia take up every nook and cranny in this quirky, folk art environment. You’ll come across everything from nostalgic toys to pure junk. Families with kids of all ages will have a blast here, and it won’t take too long to stroll through the museum. Address: 22275 Hwy. 36, Abita Springs, LA 70420
5. Have a cocktail on a carousel.
Located in the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, the Carousel Bar might just be the most interesting bar in Louisiana. Installed in 1949, visitors can take a seat at one of the carousel’s 25 seats and enjoy a beverage while the bar turns. Don’t worry, it takes about fifteen minutes for one revolution, so you don’t have to worry about motion sickness. Address: 214 Royal St., New Orleans, LA 70130
6. Get spicy!
Head on over to Avery Island to learn about how the iconic Tabasco sauce is made. You’ll learn all about the history of Tabasco, how it’s made, and the McIlhenny family behind this spicy sauce. Grab some grub at Restaurant 1868, then take a casual stroll through Jungle Gardens for a quintessential Louisiana day.
7. Learn about Louisiana’s most infamous duo.
Bonnie and Clyde met their fate on a dusty road just outside of Gibsland, in a shootout with local police in 1934. The Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Museum recounts their lives, crimes, and finals days in a series of exhibits that are truly unique and worth a visit. Address: 2419 Main St., Gibsland, LA 71028
8. Climb a mountain!
Sure, you could climb a mountain in a number of other states, but we’ve only got two here in Louisiana (admittedly, they barely qualify as mountains, but they’re still our mountains). At 535 feet, Driskill Mountain is the highest natural summit in Louisiana. The hike is just shy of two miles, but the bragging rights to claim that you’ve climbed the mountain are immeasurable. Address: 12199 Hwy. 507, Simsboro, LA 71275
