Life in the Hawkeye State is slow placed and old-fashioned. While we’ve certainly kept up with the times, and Iowa is home to a vibrant community of tech companies and entrepreneurs, there are a few things about life in Iowa that never seem to change.
1. The State Fair
From Pork Queens to the Butter Cow, the Iowa State Fair will always remain smothered in tradition... and delicious, unhealthy foods.
2. Kids working away on snow days.
Every single entrepreneurial Iowan got their start shoveling snow for a few bucks when school was out. How else could we afford the fastest, coolest sleds that Wal Mart carried?
3. Corn obsession.
Even though it's kind of a cliche, we love the stuff. All summer and fall long, we indulge in Iowa sweet corn as a snack or a side dish.
4. Defending our "flyover state."
Iowa is a state with a reputation for being boring, but the truth is, we're the flyest of the flyover states. Every time we travel somewhere else, we've got to tell people what they're missing.
5. Ignoring the GPS and going gravel.
We never really needed the directions anyway, we know these back roads like the back of our hands. There's no point in sticking to the busy main roads when a gravel road will be a more scenic and less crowded drive.
6. Zucchini season
Lock your doors, or you might end up with several pounds of your neighbor's zucchini in your kitchen... or the front seat of your car.
7. Game day.
Whether you pull for the Hawkeyes or the Cyclones, when Iowa and Iowa State play each other, the whole state watches, and roots for their side enthusiastically.
8. Maid-Rites
There's nothing like a great loose-meat sandwich, and it's worth the drive out to Marshalltown for a Maid-Rite from Taylor's any time.
9. Enormous Tenderloins.
I'm not sure how this tradition started, but knowing that I can easily track down a delicious tenderloin that's larger than any plate I've ever seen is something I truly enjoy. These gigantic tenderloins mean you'll always have some leftovers to bring home! And who doesn't like bonus pork? All the Iowans I know can rally behind that idea.
