Something pretty spectacular is making its way to the Northern California coast. During the upcoming months, you'll be able to climb aboard some gorgeous reproductions of Revolutionary War-era ships and it looks absolutely amazing.
Grays Harbor Historical Seaport is a non-profit organization based out of Aberdeen, Washington. For over 25 years, they've provided hands-on educational opportunities by welcoming the public aboard the tall ships known as Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain.
These beautiful ships are exact replicas of old ships that date back hundreds of years. In fact, the original Lady Washington—named after America's very first First Lady— was a real war ship during the Revolutionary War.
After the war, Lady Washington became the first American vessel to make landfall on the west coast of North America—a pretty impressive feat considering the times. She would go on to visit Honolulu, Hong Kong, and Japan.
On the other hand, Hawaiian Chieftain's design was influenced by early colonial passenger packets that traded among Atlantic coastal cities and towns. These early ships sailed remarkably well and could enter small ports with no problem.
In 1993, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain participated in their first mock sea battle on the San Francisco bay. Today, they sail in tandem, bringing educational experiences to communities all along the west coast.
If you'd like the opportunity to climb aboard these magnificent ships yourself, you can join them at one of the various port cities they'll be visiting in the following months. They'll be in Monterey from February 28 to March 4, Redwood City from March 22 to April 9, Oakland from April 11 to April 23, and Eureka from April 26 to April 28.
If you can't make it to those dates, don't sweat it. They'll be making their way back down the coast later this year. No matter what city you make it to, you'll have your choice between an "Adventure Sail", "Evening Sail", and "Battle Sail", all of which have either 2-hour or 3-hour options.
