The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has just updated its volcano threat assessments for the first time over a decade and a slew of new U.S. volcanoes have made the organization’s “most dangerous” list.

Scientists from the USGS have announced that 18 U.S. volcanoes are officially considered to be "very high threat." These volcanoes are classified as the most dangerous in the country because of where they are located and how active they have been in the recent past. These are volcanoes that have the potential to cause major damage and loss of life if they erupt.

The top five most dangerous volcanoes in the country are Mount Kilauea in Hawaii, Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in Washington, Alaska’s Redoubt Volcano and California’s Mount Shasta.
