Who said visiting the zoo was a summer activity? If you love getting up close and personal with animals all year long, you’ll definitely want to plan a visit to this one particular Nevada zoo in the upcoming weeks. As you probably already know, most zoos close down for the winter and don’t open up again until spring. However, there’s one zoo in our state that allows visitors on certain weekends throughout the winter. This way, you can view the animals that thrive in cold habitats the way they are supposed to be seen—surrounded by a winter wonderland. This is a unique opportunity to see the animals play in a snowy paradise, and it must not be missed.
It may be winter but that doesn't mean you have to deprive yourself of seeing adorable animals. Reno's Animal Ark holds special "Winter Weekends" once a month throughout the season, in which you can come and see the zoo in all of its snow-tastic beauty.
Located just north of Reno, Animal Ark is one of the state's greatest animal attractions. This non-profit wildlife sanctuary is a top spring and summer destination, but it takes on a whole new personality during the winter.
The next Winter Weekend will take place in mid-February. The January weekend was unfortunately canceled, but you'll definitely want to make plans to attend the upcoming event. Seeing the zoo like this is a rare treat that can't be beaten.
Winter conditions are perfect for viewing the zoo's animals. Many of the mammals actually prefer cool weather, so they are much more active during the winter than they are during the summer.
Additionally, many of the animals look downright gorgeous in their winter coats. Animals like the wolves, lynx, cougars, and foxes are more playful than ever during the winter season. Seeing them trot around the snow is a spectacular sight that you don't want to miss.
Animal Ark is located at an elevation of 6,000-feet, so snowy conditions are pretty much guaranteed every year. Be sure to keep this in mind when dressing for the event and put on plenty of layers.
Don't let the chilly temperatures keep you inside this winter! There's still so much to do and see, no matter the weather conditions. The next Winter Weekend will take place February 16-17, so be sure to mark your calendars.
