Given that South Dakota has such a rich and fascinating history, it should come as no surprise that the Mount Rushmore State is somewhat of a mecca for the paranormal. Where does one go (or purposely avoid?) to experience some of these haunts? While there are countless places to visit, we recommend starting with one of these 5 disturbing South Dakota cemeteries:
1. Mount Moriah (Deadwood)
Seeing as though Mount Moriah is home to such Wild West legends as Wild Bill, Seth Bollock, and Calamity Jane, it should come as no surprise that Mount Moriah has experienced its fair share of the unexplainable! As several visitors have advised, you may feel like you are being watched whilst walking the premise, though most of the time there is no one around...
2. IOOF Cemetery (Gregory)
One of the most picturesque of SoDak cemeteries is also one of the most haunted... but why/how? As the story goes, many have encountered a mysterious, seemingly lost white-haired man who seems to be looking for someone. When you move toward him, however, is when things get weird, as he is said to completely vanish. *Note to self: Do not go to the IOOF Cemetery.*
3. McLaughlin
Now, I know what you're thinking and yes, McLaughlin is technically a town, but it is a town that was built over an old cemetery, which may explain its many creepy occurrences. From things moving around on their own inside the old Bingo Hall (built directly above the aforementioned cemetery) to sightings of ghostly figures, McLaughlin may just be the spookiest town in South Dakota.
4. Keystone Cemetery (Keystone)
Overlooking Mount Rushmore, Keystone Cemetery is the final resting place of many of the monument's original workers who -- though very much deceased -- are alleged to still creep around the cemetery admiring their hard work.
5. St. Michael's Cemetery (Sioux Falls)
In this case, it isn't the actual cemetery causing the occurrences, but rather a nearby monument belonging to that of the late Judge Amidon. During the 1862 Sioux Uprising, Amidon and his son were brutally murdered, and a grandiose memorial was later erected in his honor. While the memorial still stands, so do the alleged spirits of the Amidons, who appear in the form of orbs around both the tower and nearby cemetery.
