One of our favorite things is featuring little known places and secret spots throughout Maryland. If you also enjoy uncovering these gems, then check out the following burial site. The story behind this place is fascinating and inspiring.
Piscataway National Park is located in Accokeek, Maryland. The park is full of historic sites, hiking trails, and plenty of wildlife.
A little known area of the park is the sacred burial site of Chief Turkey Tayac.
He was a Piscataway Indian leader and activist through much of the 20th century. Most notably, he started movements for Native Americans to proudly take back their culture, in a time that society didn't encourage.
He passed away in 1978 from leukemia at the age of 83. Although burials are usually prohibited in National Parks, it was important to Chief Turkey Tayac to be buried among the grounds of his ancestors. He awaited congressional action to permit a burial, and was successful.
Today, you can still visit the site at Piscataway Park. You'll find a commemorative plaque adorned with his photo...
...and colorful decorations that visitors have added to over the years.
You never know what you'll find here but one thing's for sure, this spot is unique. Come pay respects to this great historical figure while taking in the scenery of the park.
Address:
3400 Bryan Point Road
Accokeek, MD 20607
