While South Dakota has some seriously gorgeous architecture, there are a few buildings here and there that will make you stop and do a double take. Not sure which we are referring to? Check out our list of the 6 quirkiest buildings in SoDak that will make you stop and look twice:
1. Mitchell Corn Palace (Mitchell)
Quite possibly the quirkiest structure in all of the Mount Rushmore State is the infamous Mitchell Corn Palace. The world's ONLY corn palace was built in 1892 and is adorned in a whopping 275,000 ears of corn! Even crazier? The theme of the exterior changes every year and costs a cool $100,000+ each time.
2. Chamberlain Rest Area (Chamberlain)
While it is not a building in the traditional sense, the picnic area at the Chamberlain Rest Area is still worth noting, as it has a larger-than-life concrete replica of a traditional Native American tipi.
3. "Largest Survival Community On Earth" (Black Hills)
Located smack dab in the middle of the normally beautiful Black Hills is the "Largest Survival Community On Earth," which is comprised of military-munitions-bunkers-turned-doomsday homes that may look cold and scary on the outside, but - according to developer Vivos xPoint - clean up nicely.
4. Pettigrew House (Sioux Falls)
Is it just me or does the Pettigrew House look like something out of a horror movie? The home and museum, which was originally built in 1889, was the home of former Senator Richard Franklin Pettigrew and now serves as a FREE museum that is chock-full of historic artifacts, Native American clothing, and antique guns.
5. Washington Pavilion (Sioux Falls)
Located just down the road from the Pettigrew House, the Washington Pavilion may look like something out of the future, but actually serves as city's premier art and performance venue.
6. Cosmos Mystery House (Rapid City)
Deserted shack or legitimate business? In this case, the scary-looking building is actually pretty stinking cool. It houses the Cosmos Mystery House, where "all laws of nature and physics appear to be suspended" (a la water flowing uphill and being able to walk on walls).
