Delawareans truly love their food, but some things can get strange looks if you order them out of state. In fact, some of these things are impossible to track down once you leave the area! Read more about Delaware’s dining habits below, and see how many sound familiar to you.
1. Scrapple
Scrapple is probably Delaware's most iconic food. This strange combination of pig parts combines to create the tastiest breakfast meal, and we eat it for any occasion.
2. Blue Crabs
Blue crabs pulled right from the Delaware bay are delicious. Whether you boil them or turn them into crab cakes, you're sure to have a great dinner with these guys around.
3. Fries with Vinegar
This seems strange until you have it for the first time - typically at Thrashers. Once you've tasted fries with malt vinegar, though, you'll never want to go back to ketchup again.
4. The Bobbie from Capriotti's
Delaware's most iconic sandwich has launched Capriotti's into the national spotlight. Who knew one odd combination of food could spark a sandwich revolution?
5. Slippery Dumplings
We don't do round dumplings here. Track down your grandmother's chicken and dumpling recipe and make a big pot for a chilly winter day, and you'll see why we've got it better than the rest of the country.
6. Muskrat
Okay, okay, I can forgive you if you've never tried this. But if you do chow down on muskrat, congratulations, you're more of a Delawarean than I am!
7. Pretzel Salad
It's so hard to find pretzel salad anywhere else these days, but go to a party in Sussex Co., and someone is sure to have brought along a dish.
8. Cioppino
Delawareans love their seafood AND their pasta, so cioppino is a favorite. Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth Beach makes some of the best you'll ever try.
9. Grotto Pizza
Whether you love it or hate it, you can't be a true Delawarean until you've had at least once slice of Delaware's famous pizza.
10. The Nic-o-Boli
The Nic-o-Boli is one of the most famous meals in the state! Be sure to order it with extra cheese next time you're in Rehoboth Beach.
11. Delaware Bay Oysters
Of course, we're proud of our Oysters! Nothing is more fun than dining across the country and seeing "Delaware Bay Oysters" on the menu. You know they'll be great!
