Here in Alabama, there are several unique attractions that many people aren’t aware of. In fact, one of them can be found in the city of Dothan. For information about this unique attraction and the city in which it’s located, read on.
The city of Dothan, which was established in 1885 and is the county seat of Houston County, Alabama, is home to the nation's largest peanut festival. What most people are unaware of is this city is also home to the world's smallest city block.
While driving through downtown Dothan, you'll come across this city block at the convergence of Troy, Appletree, and Museum streets. Over the years, this triangular patch of land has become one of the city's most unique tourist attractions.
An interesting fact about this city block is that it used to be the home of thriving businesses. During the 1920s, it was home to a snack shop. And in 1941, it was home to a service station. Today, this city block is home to a granite monument, a stop sign, a yield sign, and a street sign.
On May 1, 1964, the Camellia Garden Club of Dothan honored this patch of land by marking it "The smallest city block in the world." Many years earlier, it was referred to as the world’s smallest block in "Ripley’s Believe It or Not!."
The next time you're passing through Dothan, be sure to stop and take a look at the world's smallest city block. It might not look like much, but at least you can say you've seen it. And don't blink, or you just might miss it.
The World's Smallest City Block is located near the Dothan City Civic Center and the Wiregrass Museum of Art. Its address is 201-209 N College St., Dothan, AL 36303.
