How common are blizzards in Minnesota?
They’re not uncommon, we’d say; at the time of this writing, the average amount of blizzards that occur in Minnesota each year is about two. Luckily for those of us who have endured winter in Minnesota year after year, it’s an occurrence we can prepare for. Typically, we have a few days’ warning and time to plan, which is immensely helpful. Some years, however, can be rougher than others; for example, two blizzards struck two days apart in March of 1975. The storm produced incredibly high winds with gusts of up to 100 miles per hour, which riled up lake waves on Lake Michigan as high as 20 feet. In 1991, Minnesota was slammed by a Halloween blizzard that dumped up to 35 inches of snow overnight on Duluth. With schools and businesses closed for days following the event, it became one of Minnesota’s most unforgettable blizzards. What are some things to do in Minnesota during winter?
Don’t let the extreme winters goad you into not enjoying your winter; there are plenty of fun (and safe) things to do even during the coldest months. There are always the classics, like skiing, snowboarding, sledding, building snow forts, tubing, etc., but there are plenty of more creative options as well. For example, Minnesota is home to some amazing winter hikes! Most of our state parks remain open even during winter, and the trails they contain are veritable winter wonderlands. Some of the best destinations for winter hikes in Minnesota are found in Afton State Park, Blue Mounds State Park, Rice Lake State Park, and Jay Cooke State Park. We also really love camping, even when it’s cold, and you can try your hand at ice fishing as well. Sometimes, towns will have dog sledding or even ice sculpture competitions! Minnesota is positively vibrant, even during the chilliest times of year. There’s always something to do!
