As the year comes to a close, it’s nice to take a moment and reflect on how utterly ridiculous the previous 12 months turned out to be. This year in particular was packed with shocking and bizarre Massachusetts events. What do snow monsters, kitchen utensils, cats, and Canadians all have in common? They are all featured in some truly insane occurrences this year. Read on.
Sounds like sour grapes to me. Whether or not you believe Tom Brady was involved in some shady football dealing, one thing is obvious: you can't keep a legendary team down for long. Woot woot Patriots.
Just kidding. Sort of. According to the Washington Post, Massachusetts currently has the highest ratio of cats to dogs in the nation. There are 1.87 cats for every dog in MA. In further news, cats everywhere are celebrating by allowing you to give them exactly two head pats before napping in the basket of clean laundry.
Icebergs lining the streets, pets and small children tumbling into snow drifts, unprecedented sales of tickets to Florida (probably). I think we all remember the insanity that was Winter 2015. May such tribulations remain a memory.
Related to the above. On January 27th, a yeti appeared on the streets of Boston and was spotted several more times during the winter season. As long as that yeti can shovel a parking space, he's welcome at my place this winter.
5. A gallon of gas became cheaper than a gallon of milk.
Depending on where you live, of course. In many places it became cheaper to fill your tank than to fill your cereal bowl. I mean, if you eat a lot of cereal.
Okay, so maybe this is cheating, but bear with me. In 2015, Boston Magazine highlighted this 1919 headline by the Boston Post: "Giant Wave of 2,300,000 Gallons of Molasses, 50 Feet High, Sweeps Everything Before It—100 Men, Women and Children Caught In Sticky Stream—Buildings, Vehicles, and L Structure Crushed." A giant tank of molasses exploded in the North End. That happened. What a terrifying anniversary.
7. Massachusetts googled "Canadian Men" more than anything else.
You read that correctly. Estately.com figured out the top search term for each state in 2015 using Google Trends, and apparently...people in Massachusetts are INCREDIBLY intersted in learning more about our male northern neighbors. Considering what some other states are into, we lucked out for sure.
Who would have thought that one of Boston's most notorious violent criminals would be all over the big screen in 2015? The film was even shot in Boston around some of Whitey Bulger's old haunts.

9. Economic growth in Massachusetts outpaced the U.S. economy.
Put this one down in the "insanely good" column. The Boston Globe reports that the state’s technology, biotechnology, and health care sectors are helping to boost the state economy. With things not looking so good elsewhere, this is definitely a pleasant 2015 surprise.
10. This woman convinced the DMV to let her wear a colander on her head.
In 2015, Massachusetts upheld its commitment to religious freedom when it allowed Lindsay Miller to don this headgear for her license picture. The reason? Miller is a member Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and identifies as a "pastafarian." The DMV decided that because the colander was not obscuring her face, they would permit it.
11. And finally, two Massachusetts men film this hilarious viral video (Caution: Strong Language).
Two guys on a boat find something bizarre in the water beside them. Is it a sea monster? A baby whale? An alien? This video became so popular that the men were featured on Jimmy Kimmel. Prepare yourself for THE STRONGEST Boston accent ever caught in the wild. Seriously, I almost cried laughing.
