Southern California may be known for its sandy beaches, beautiful weather, and mouthwatering food, but let’s not forget that SoCal is also filled with tons of history. One of our favorite historic sites to visit is the oldest standing residence in one of Southern California’s biggest cities. Here’s a look at this incredible slice of the past that can still be experienced today.
If you're looking to experience a slice of SoCal's unique history, you'll want to make a visit to the oldest standing residence in Los Angeles located on Olvera Street in the Los Angeles Plaza Historic District.
Avila Adobe is located at 10 Olvera St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
This well preserved adobe was originally built in 1818 by Don Francisco Avila. It may be 200 years old, but it's still standing today and open to the public for tours.
Although this home was severely damaged from an earthquake in 1971, this residence has since been restored and turned into a museum to represent its original condition. Today, it serves as an example of what a California home was like back in the 1800s.
This residence is open daily and admission is free. Tours of The Avila Adobe are offered between Monday and Saturday each week.
During the tour you'll get a close-up view of what life was like in this part of California in the 1800s.
Seven rooms in total have been preserved from the original adobe house including the dining room, family room, sleeping quarters, an office, and a kitchen that also served as a bathing room.
The sleeping quarters you'll tour represent separate rooms that were reserved for the parents and for the children.
As you look around at these humble surroundings, you'll be taken back to a simpler time.
An official Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, a California Historical Landmark, and located on the National Register of Historic Places, this is one slice of SoCal history that everyone should experience at least once.
