The trail featured below is so bizarre that you may just feel like you’ve been transported to a different planet. Located within the Inyo National Forest, this easy hike is great for all skill levels and it’s bound to blow you away. After all, it’s not every day you get to hike across a lava dome comprised of obsidian rock! Check out this unique hike and be sure to make it your next adventure.
Have you ever wondered what it's like to hike across a volcano? You'll find a unique hike that lets you do just that near Mammoth Lakes at what's called the Obsidian Dome.
The Obsidian Dome Trail is a short, 1-mile out-and-back trail that leads you through a massive dome made of obsidian rock. This natural dome was formed completely from solidified lava which eventually turned into obsidian.
The hiking trail is completely surrounded by these rocks which best resemble black glass. It will have you wondering if this is what walking on the moon feels like!
Obsidian is often regarded as the sharpest natural material known to man, and it's played a significant role throughout human history. After all, obsidian was mankind's first "tool". This place is simply amazing from both a geologic and historic perspective.
Since obsidian is such a hard and sharp material, come prepared with adequate footwear. This hiking trail is relatively easy with little elevation change, but it can be hard on your feet without proper shoes.
The dome itself is a mesmerizing natural wonder, but the view from the trail isn't too shabby either. From here, you'll have an excellent perspective of the Eastern Sierras.
During winter, the trail tooks on an entirely new personality. This area has a vast network of winter hiking trails that are excellent for Nordic skiing or snowshoeing. However, it doesn't really matter when you see this fascinating place, just as long as you DO see it sometime.
Keep in mind that taking any rocks from Obsidian Dome is strictly prohibited! Hikers should do their best to keep this stunning natural wonder in pristine shape for years to come.
To get to Obsidian Dome, drive north on Highway 395 from Mammoth Lakes and turn left onto Bald Mountain Road. The trailhead is visible from the parking lot and marked with a trail map.
Doesn’t this unique hike look extraordinary? This is definitely not a landscape you see every day. Our region sure does have a ton of one-of-a-kind trails. Check out these 11 Trails In Northern California You Must Take If You Love The Outdoors for more.
