An unavoidable part of life, every now and then you’ll encounter someone who isn’t from the Empire State but already has a picture in their mind of exactly who we are. While we all may hail from a different region of our state, there are certain stereotypes about being a New Yorker that we can all relate to. Check them out!
1. We're always buried in snow.
One of the many things that comes with living in the Northeast is the assumption from others that we're always buried under 10-feet of snow. It's true that we're no strangers to blizzardous types of weather, but let's also not forget that New York gets all four seasons and we aren't always experiencing a massive state-wide whiteout.
2. We're only ever eating pizza, wings, and bagels.
We'll be the last ones to argue with you over the fact that New York is the state that makes bagels, pizza, and wings the best - but that doesn't mean its the only foods we're ever feasting on! Don't go assuming that this is what we're eating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on a weekly basis.
3. We're all massive sports fans.
New York's sports teams are ones that almost always have a large and lively following behind them, but not every single person living in the state of New York are people who are well versed in the subject of sports. Don't go thinking we're all diehard fans who will know what you're talking about!
4. And we're all rowdy tailgaters.
Going tailgating at a Buffalo Bills game is an experience that you'll never forget in your lifetime, but due to just how enthusiastic some of New York's fans tend to be, the rest of us have earned the reputation of being quite the rowdy tailgaters.
5. We're always in a rush.
New Yorkers have earned the reputation of always being in a rush, but we assure you that we're not speeding our way through life and missing any of the good parts!
6. We're always ready to be argumentative at the drop of a dime.
When it comes to stereotypes of New Yorkers, you'll often hear things like that we're argumentative or always in a hurry to get to the next place. But rest assured, we swear we're a friendly bunch who knows how to take it slow and enjoy all the good parts of living in the Empire State.
7. We only live in New York City.
We've all experienced, the moment you tell someone you're from New York and they boldly assume that you mean New York City. 8 million of us may be living in the Big Apple, but there's roughly 11 million more of us who live outside of this small pocket of our state!
8. We all have gnarly accents.
If you've ever watched The Office, then you've probably seen the episode where Jim Carrey plays a guy interviewing for a job who's from the Finger Lakes with a distinct accent unlike anyone else's on the show. Between our Finger Lakes friends and those of us who are out on Long Island, our state has earned the reputation of having some pretty wild accents - but not all of us have one.
9. We're basically Canadian citizens.
Some of our residents may have a spectacular view of our northern neighbors, but generally speaking, most of New York state is quite a hike from the Canadian border.
