The phrase “never judge a book by its cover” definitely applies to restaurants. Sometimes the most hole-in-the-wall, mom & pop joints serve better food than five-star eateries with white tablecloths and dress codes. Carniceria Los Vaqueros has some of Arizona’s best tacos, but you’d never know that simply by looking at the exterior of this unassuming grocery store.
Formerly known as Carniceria El Vaquero, this hole-in-the-wall meat market incurred a minor name change when its new owners took over. Most people overlook this local treasure, but places like these are prime examples of why we should never judge a book by its cover.
Everything from fresh produce to spices can be found in the store, all at extremely reasonable prices. You can also purchase pint-sized containers of toppings like several salsas and vegetables.
On the menu are several varieties of tacos, as well as tortas, Sonoran Dogs, chimichangas, and pretty much any other Mexican dish you can think of. The meat is marinated in-house with the perfect amount of spice and flavor.
Tacos come loaded up with toppings from the salsa bar, and their complex flavor profiles are guaranteed to send your taste buds straight to heaven. Order more than you're hungry for just to be safe; they tend to be on the smaller side.
Low-carb or just not a taco fan? The carniceria has plenty of other delicious options. Pork, chicken, and even top-quality rack of lamb around Christmastime are cooked to perfection right before your eyes.
Leaving without stocking up on homemade tortillas would be a cardinal sin. Made in old-world fashion, they taste rich, buttery, and reminiscent of childhood.
