It’s always exciting to see Northern California being put in the spotlight for our outstanding natural attractions. Recently, one of our hiking trails was named one of the best fall hiking trails in the country. This little-known trail is no joke. At eight miles long, you’ll likely work up a sweat as you traverse this rugged trail. However, you’ll find that the views are so worth it. Fall is a great time to explore this underrated hiking trail so lace up your boots and go get started!
One of Northern California's most underrated peaks is the glorious Mount Eddy in the Trinity Divide. With Mount Shasta nearby, it's easy to overlook this 9,026-foot-high peak. However, this peak has its own incredible splendor and it's definitely worth checking out. This hiking trail, recognzed by MSN as one of the best in the country, lets you do just that.
The Trinity Divide is an eastern subrange of mountains in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It's here that you'll find Mount Eddy, the highest peak in the contiguous U.S. west of Interstate 5. The hike to Mount Eddy can be moderately difficult but it's more than worth it.
To get to the trailhead you'll drive north of Weed approximately 3.5 miles before taking the Edgewood/Gazelle exit. Here you'll go under the freeway, turn right, and after half a mile you'll turn left onto Stewart Springs Road. After 4.7 miles, turn right onto Forest Road 17 and park at the trailhead at Parks Creek Pass.
The trail may be named after Mount Eddy, but another prominent feature of this hike are the numerous views of all three Deadfall Lakes surrounded by the Trinity Alps. You'll reach Lower Deadfall Lake after just three miles but you'll want to focus your attention on the larger and even more stunning Middle and Upper lakes.
Middle Deadfall Lake is the largest lake in the basin and it's simply breathtaking. On a clear fall day, the sight couldn't be any lovelier. Breathe in the crisp mountain air and spend some time at this delightfully remote oasis.
Upper Deadfall Lake can be found further along the trail and boasts the best views of Mount Eddy. This area makes for a great place to rest and take in the sight of this little-known mountain peak before heading back down.
The Mount Eddy Trail is a surprisingly unknown hike. Tucked away in the northernmost region of the state, this trail makes for a memorable autumn adventure. Take advantage of these delightful views before the season ends. It's truly one of the best!
